What is a sort code?
Sort code
A sort code is a six-digit UK bank identifier, usually written 20-00-00, paired with an eight-digit account number. Faster Payments, Bacs, and CHAPS use that pair. It is a routing address, not a ledger balance. Store it on the payout method. Post to wallets and clearing pots.
How does a sort code work?
The six digits pick the bank and branch. The account number picks the account. Together they are the domestic UK address. Some APIs accept an IBAN instead. Validate length and, where you can, the modulus check before you originate.
Sort code vs IBAN
An IBAN can contain the same account. Domestic UK rails still ask for sort code and account number. Cross-border SEPA asks for an IBAN. Keep both if you pay both ways. Do not convert one into the other unless you have a library you trust.
How it works with Blnk
Store sort code and account number on the payout method. Copy them onto the transaction metadata when you send on Faster Payments or another UK rail.
